Although looks disgusting , scientists have discovered new secrets that can change your outlook on rats . Scientists
in Tanzania reported a bacterial infection the mice were able to detect
tuberculosis ( TB ) , reported by Al Jazeera , Monday, June 3, 2013 .Researchers from APOPO ( Anti Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling or Anti Personnel Land Mines Detection Product Development ) trained rats in the African giants to develop the ability to detect the deadly disease tuberculosis .
The results are astounding . The rats that have saved thousands of lives in Tanzania , East Africa Section .
Rats were not tasked to cure the disease , but scientists trained to have the ability to sniff out and mendetaksi TB bacteria infection .
According to Bart Weetjens , APOPO founder , the rats were trained to evaluate human saliva samples in just 10 minutes .
" Meanwhile , an analyst at the laboratory takes a full day to detect disease , " said Weetjens .
Weetjens explained , the mice were trained to evaluate human saliva by eating beans that have been covered in saliva .
If within 10 minutes the rat was scratching his leg , it indicates people are infected with TB , "said Weetjens .Until now , TB has killed more people than some other diseases , including HIV infection . This new way of diagnosing the disease is quite inexpensive , accurate , and get results very quickly .
" The rats worked very well . Rats have helped local clinics accelerate the detection of a person suffering from tuberculosis . Currently , the number of people infected has risen 30 percent , " said a doctor at a local clinic in Tanzania .
Previously , APOPO also has trained rats to detect the native African land mines . The animals were trained to detect the disgusting smell of explosives .
